What specific glassware (makes and models) would you recommend for the nanoparticle synthesis protocols? It could be nice to include recommendations for the round bottom flask, reflux funnel, water bath, stir bar and heater, like are included for the sterile plastic 0.5 L bottle.

Thanks for the input! We’ll definitely add example models to the respective protocol.
To your question: for the setup and batch size described in protocol #1.1 we usually use a reflux funnel (250 ml, NS29/32) from Buhler and a round bottom flask (1000 ml, NS 29/32, PN: 2172154) from Schott Duran. For the water bath we use common heat resistant kitchen ware. For the magnetic stirring hotplate more or less every model is sufficient, as long as it’s stirring and heating 😉 in our lab we have the following two models: Heidolph MR 3001 (PN 504-10000-00) and IKA-Werke RET B (PN 0003622000).

Regarding the glassware, indeed we have used the flasks and funnels as Phil described. Yet, I have made the magnetic beads in all kinds of vessels before we had found our chemical glassware stock. Virtually any flask or bottle can be used for that. The key point is that it should be clean and sterile (no DNA/RNA) and you should be able to heat it up to ~80°C (in a water/oil bath) or a higher temperature if you want to place it directly on a heater, and you should be able to use a screw lid to close it after adding ammonia.
So, dependent on the scale, standard 100 ml – 1l laboratory bottles work fine, if you don’t have a dripping funnel, you can add the iron solution with a manual pipette for example.
What I would suggest is simply to give it a try on a smaller scale (~100 ml or smaller) and take it from there.

Maybe you will find this question stupid, but I am curious if the magnetic bar used for stirring is in the NaOH solution, or in the water bath. I expect it to be in the NaOH solution (to mix it) but on the drawing it seems to be in the water bath which holds the round bottom flask (https://bomb.bio/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/1.1_BOMB_MNP_synthesis_V1.0.pdf ).

not at all.
While I have not used the protocol myself I know that the other part of our team who came up with it recommend to place a magnetic stir bar in both the water bath as well as the round bottom flask in order to avoid heat accumulation.
Also, I fully agree that the drawing in the protocol is a bit unclear in that regard.
