Although I  do have access to TEOS, it is possibly not as easily procurable for some members of of the bio community.

On the other hand sodium silicates are readily available and less costly so I did a brief search fro silica coating techniques using sodium silicate instead of TEOS. Amongst other articles, I found this report:

One-step synthesis of silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles by electrooxidation of iron in sodium silicate solution  —  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11051-012-0807-7

Does anybody have any comments or experience with this type of synthesis?

        Dear SilicaFig,

Thank you for your message. Frankly speaking, I did not consider the possibility that TEOS might not be accessible to some, but you are right.

We did not try to use sodium silicates for coating, but it seems it is not too difficult to do, so we might give it a try sometime. If you are planning to try this before we do, it would be great if you could share your experience here for others.

        Best regards and thank you,

        T.
